Many parents are concerned about the impact of screens on children. Fortunately, research can help parents navigate screen time.

As a senior education researcher at SRI, Claire Christensen specializes in early childhood media across a range of subjects including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); literacy; and social-emotional learning.

In a recent interview with CNBC Make It, CNBC’s financial wellness publication, she offered suggestions for parents aiming to distinguish “good” screen time from “bad” screen time.

“We’re looking for videos that are intended to teach,” Christensen told CNBC. “As a researcher, we want to see anything that either is having kids talk back to the show or giving kids suggestions of other things they could do related to the show.”

In addition to sharing research-backed insights about how children interact with digital media, she presented several tips that can help parents of young children navigate screen time.
